Hokies offer rising 2012 defender
Virginia Tech has extended a new 2012 scholarship in the past week. The latest offer goes to a rising defensive star in the Commonwealth.
"Virginia Tech offered last week, he got an offer from North Carolina last week too," Ringgold (Va.) Dan River head coach Ferrell Edmunds said of his son, Trey Edmunds. "They (Virginia Tech) had been talking, they had seen him for a couple years. Coach Stinespring came down and they watched his film and his growth and offered."
How did he react to the scholarships?
"He's very excited," he said. "It's great, North Carolina and Virginia Tech both are schools he really watches and thinks a lot about them."
Edmunds specifically noted the Hokies more.
"They are a school with a lot of success," he said. "Trey over the years has enjoyed watching Tech. He feels like it's a great opportunity for him. He's really enjoyed the attention, especially from a school like Virginia Tech; they've got a great history.
"Right now he's trying to absorb it all. All the schools are great schools and provide great opportunities for him. It was great Bryan Stinespring came in. In Danville, Tech is big-time here. That's a school he felt good about, he felt good about the others as well."
Edmunds hasn't visited anywhere recently and just wrapped up his season for Dan River earning first team all-district as a running back and linebacker while posting 1,300-yards on the ground.
"He played a phenomenal season on both sides of the ball," Edmunds said. "He also played special teams and was first or second in tackles.
"I wanted to really use him on one side of the ball, but he was averaging five or six yards a carry."
The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder has been starting for Dan River since his freshman year. However, this appeared to be a breakout season for his son.
"What really helped Trey was track, he ran the 400 and 200 and did quite well," he said. "He had some phenomenal times and his determination is unbelievable to get things done. That allowed him to get that extra gear and sometimes those plays come out."
