Things falling into place
There are two weeks left before the opener. One more scrimmage - next Monday. Tom O'Brien hasn't made up his mind on some things, but others are falling into place.
The battle at left guard? Ty Hall missed the scrimmage Thursday night with a shoulder/neck injury, officially opening the door for Ryan Poles to take the job most of us thought he'd get anyway (after all, he IS listed first on the depth chart in the media guide).
"If you're not practicing, you're staying the same or getting worse," O'Brien said, citing a cliché by adding, "You can't make the club in the tub."
Andre Callender was out again with a shoulder - as L.V. Whitworth had a big scrimmage of 100 yards (or so) on the ground and 45 through the air. Whitworth was going to be the starter, anyway, but Callender is losing valuable time. A.J. Brooks ran for 43 yards on 12 carries Thursday and freshman Jeff Smith came back to earth with four yards on six tries.
The naked eyes from the press box think Whitworth looks quicker (and a bit lighter?). "No comment," said O'Brien, who refuses to acknowledge quickness from this kid. "I think he's a plodding plowhorse," the coach said - after saying, "I'd say the tailback looks pretty good."
