Loss of Metcalfe adds injury to insult
Shortly after the completion of Vanderbilt's 88-78 defeat to Wake Forest, the Commodore program announced that junior center Alan Metcalfe had fractured the second metatarsal in his left foot.
As if the VU program didn't already have enough to deal with.
For a team that had just 10 scholarship players, the loss of Metcalfe -- who is expected to be out for at least six weeks -- is just about the worst news the short-handed program could receive. Just two games into the 2006-07 season, the already out-gunned Commodore war ship is rapidly taking on water.
Metcalfe hadn't exactly reminded watchers of Hakeem Olajuwan. Despite starting both of the Commodores' games this season, he was averaging 5.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and had registered seven fouls. The 6-10 center didn't even play in more than half of VU's games last year.
