Randy Shannon will be named the University of Miami's next football coach at an 11 o'clock press conference Friday morning.

University of Miami President Donna Shalala made the decision late Thursday afternoon after university personnel spent the entire day grilling Shannon on all the multiple issues of the job.

As late as mid-afternoon, athletic director Paul Dee was still making plans to interview additional candidates. But Shalala and various trustees and other university officials became so convinced that Shannon was their man as the day wore on that she called off the search and the decision was made that Shannon would get the job.

Long rumored for coaching vacancies at various universities, Shannon has one of the best defensive minds in the business.
