First, let me preface the 'She said' portion of this column by saying that Utah is a good team. That being said, the Beavers were good as well, but at the end of the night they just couldn't "finish" (one of Coach Riley's favorite sayings if you've ever attended practice.)
While there was a lot to like on Thursday night, I am left scratching my head on a few decisions.
First, what I liked:
Jacquizz Rodgers. The guy is a stud.
Brady Camp. He has turned into a clutch tight end that can block AND make the big catch.
The offensive line. Here is a group who has far exceeded my expectations for the year. Yes, they gave up 3 sacks, but Utah's defense was fast, athletic, and they were mixing things up
they reminded me a lot of the Beaver's defense.
Lyle Moevao. I love his toughness and leadership. He is a fighter.
Shane Morales. Is there anything that this guy can't catch?
OK, now to the head scratchers:
Ryan McCants. Like I said, I love Quizz, but why aren't they mixing things up with McCants every once in awhile? The two give the Beavers backfield such a different look and would keep defenses on their heels. Quizz had a stellar night against SC's big guys, but McCants may have had more success against Utah's smaller, quicker defense. Plus, Utah keyed in on Quizz, and practiced tackling a shorter back all week in practice.
Brady Camp. Why aren't the coaches utilizing him more? He is proving to be the strongest tight end prospect among the TE stable.
The last possession play calling. After moving the ball fairly well down the field all night, something happened on that last possession. With 1:29 left on the clock, I would have liked to see the Beavers run down the clock and force overtime (if they couldn't punch it in themselves). Instead, the Beavers tried two passes and one rush to go three and out while only 23 seconds ticked off the clock, giving Utah 1:06 to march down the field with one of the best kickers in the country, especially when the Beaver punter is a rookie who has been hit and miss. Hekker hit the punt out of bounds, Utah takes over on their own 45 yard line, and the rest is history.
