"We got off to a slow start," coach Frank Haith said. "We shot the ball well, but we turned it over too much. They had a lot of easy buckets early." Trailing by 12 with 6:09 to play in the first half, Miami went on a 19-4 run and built a 27-26 lead at halftime. "I thought the late run in the first half to get the lead was critical," Haith said. Miami fell behind by 14 midway through the first half, 22-8. But the Canes regrouped to end the half on a 19-4 run. After opening a 12-point lead on a James Dews layup with under six minutes left, the Seahawks worked their way back into it. Miami led by four points, 62-58, with 29 seconds to play and forced two UNC Wilmington turnovers to come out with the win. "UNCW is a good team," Haith said. "They're scrappy and play very hard. We had to turn it up defensively to beat them." Dews and Malcolm Grant were the only double digit scorers for UM. Dews hit on eight of 10 shots and had 17 points, and Grant had 18 points on six of 10 shooting (he was two of three from three-point range). "Those two guys were tremendous for us today," Haith said. "I thought they carried us at times." Cyrus McGowan had nine points, a team-high nine rebounds and five blocked shots. Chad Tomko had 16 points to lead UNC-Wilmington (1-3), which previously upset Penn State, 80-69, in the first round. Miami held UNC Wilmington to 38.2 percent shooting while the Canes made good on 50 percent of their shots. UM had a 36-33 rebounding advantage but was hurt by 21 turnovers and 12 missed free throws. Dwayne Collins hit just one of five free throws and finished with nine points and five rebounds. After a crisp game on Thursday against Tulane, he turned the ball over four times. UM, which improves to 4-0, now plays at 6 p.m. Sunday in the championship round against South Carolina.
