The Hurricane men's basketball team emerged from the Charleston Classic with a 3-0 record and the title after defeating South Carolina on Sunday, 85-70.

Miami trailed by 11 early on, 15-4, before dealing better with the South Carolina press.

UM led by three at halftime, opened a 15-point second half lead and held on over the last four minutes after the Gamecocks cut it to an eight-point game.

"I thought our guys really hung in after the slow start," coach Frank Haith said. "I thought our guys played very well other than (24) turnovers. We didn't give them many bustouts because of turnovers, so that was a good thing. We got a chance to set our defense, and I thought our defense was really good tonight."

Dwayne Collins had 17 points and 15 rebounds and was named the Tournament MVP.

"When he plays at the level he played at tonight we become tough to guard," Haith said. "And that's why it's important he has it every night. We need him to rise like that all the time. Playing like that I really believe we have a chance to be a really good team."

James Dews had 22 points in the win, including three-of-three on three-pointers.

"I'm shocked he wasn't on the All-Tournament team," Haith said. "He made huge buckets."

Durand Scott had eight points and 10 rebounds but turned the ball over seven times.

"Durand had some freshman mistakes ball handling-wise," Scott said. "But with that said, you look at the 10 rebounds, the little things he does - he finds a way to help you win a basketball game."

Reggie Johnson provided a lift off the bench with seven points and seven rebounds in just 10 minutes of work.

"Reggie is a tough kid," Haith said. "Watching Reggie grow, I think if he gets to 275 (from 295 pounds) somehow - the guy has great hands, great feet, and he's so big. And he moves, has decent mobility. You need that size in our league.

"Reggie goes in the game and he makes plays. That's all you want."

UM shot 53.6 percent from the floor and held South Carolina to 34.2 percent shooting.

Miami outrebounded the Gamecocks 57-31.

"We rebounded the ball - that was key," Haith said. "we really dominated the glass."

Miami improves to 5-0 after handing South Carolina its first loss.
