The Washington State University men's hoop team enjoyed their fourth consecutive winning season in 2009-10, largely due to the efforts of sophomore shooting guard Klay Thompson. Thompson led the Cougars in scoring, finishing with a 19.6 point-per-game average, including a near-school-record 43-point performance against San Diego that clinched the Great Alaska Shootout Championship for Wazzu.
Thompson was also the two-time Pac-10 player of the week and helped the Cougars in important wins over LSU, Arizona and Stanford.
Thompson was also one of two Cougars named to all-conference team, making the first team and was named to the Rivals' all-junior team for the 2010-11 season.
Thompson's continued offensive scoring prowess and improved play have not only given Wazzu success last year but also a good chance to move up the Pac-10 ladder this year. For the aforementioned reasons, CougZone voters have made Thompson one of our three finalists for CougZone Athlete of the Year.
