What may have seemed preposterous to some a short time ago is beginning to look more and more realistic as the Washington State University Cougar men's basketball team moved one step closer to potentially making the NCAA Tournament with a convincing 73-56 win over California in Berkeley.

The win moves Wazzu to 15-2 overall and puts them in a first-place tie with Arizona at 4-1 atop the Pac-10 conference while also likely improving the all-important RPI to the low 20s or high teens.

The win was a genuine team effort as the Cougars were led in scoring by five players in double digits, led by sophomore Daven Harmeling, junior Kyle Weaver and senior Ivory Clark with 14 points apiece. Juniors Derrick Low and Robbie Cowgill also tossed in 11 points apiece.

The Cougars once again got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 9-5 lead after the first media timeout and gradually pulling away from there to an 11-point halftime advantage at 40-28 - their first double digit halftime lead in Pac-10 play so far this year. They did it by shooting 55% and grabbing 15 defensive rebounds.

The Cougars have been a second half team for much of the year and true to form, they opened up a 15-point margin on the Bears shortly into the second half. Cal went on a mini-run to pull within 10 points with 7:55 remaining in the game but a Clark dunk off the timeout sent Wazzu on 13-4 run and effectively, the game was over as they coasted in for the final margin of victory.

The Cougars will now face Stanford in Palo Alto on Saturday with a chance to lock up sole possession of first-place in the Pac-10 if Oregon can upset Arizona in Tucson.

The Cougars next take on Stanford on Saturday, January 13 at 4pm in Palo Alto.
