August 19, 2008Throughout the 2008 season, SECTIONSPORTS will post blog entries submitted by standouts from around the state. The first comes courtesy of Jordan Wynn, Colorado commitment and senior quarterback at state reigning champion Oceanside. Wynn provides details about the upcoming year and practice so far.
To all the readers:
My name is Jordan Wynn, and I am the quarterback for Oceanside High School, the defending CIF Division II state champion. Last year was an exciting year, as we were the first San Diego school to ever win a State Championship.
This year is a new year, but with the same goals. We have many new faces and we are working hard to get back to the Home Depot Center, where the state championships take place. This summer we have been working hard and have competed in two passing league tournaments: the San Diego State Passing Tournament and the North County Passing League Tournament. In both of those, we had good showings, including a first place finish in the North Country event.
Both tournaments helped prep us for the beginning of the real season, even though passing league is not a true measuring stick of how a team will perform. Just this past week we had "hell week," which consisted of two practices a day. We ended the week with a full scrimmage on Saturday, which I felt went fairly well.
We are continuing our work this week, however we will only have one practice before having another Saturday scrimmage. We start the new school year on the 25. On the Friday of that week, we have our first live scrimmage against a team other than ourselves: we host Torrey Pines High School at 7 p.m. The following week we have our season-opener against Eastlake High School at Southwest College.
As a team right now our mindset is that it's a new season. Many people are trying to compare us to last year's team, and although there are some similarities, this is a new team. A few polls and rankings have come out which have us ranked very high, but those are all based on last year's team. This team still has to prove itself.
Our main goal is to get back to Qualcomm Stadium -- where the section championship games are held -- and win a fifth consecutive division championship. Now, with the state title-game based on selection, we can only do so much, leaving the rest to the selection committee. I feel we have a great chance at accomplishing our goals, and I look forward to the start of the season.
Before the summer began, I committed to play football at the University of Colorado; I'm very excited about that. My spring and summer were very busy with recruiting, which was a hectic process. I ended up with scholarship offers from several schools: Colorado, Colorado State, Iowa State, Utah, New Mexico, and San Diego State. There were various schools that were very close to offering, but I made my decision and am very confident with it. I greatly look forward to my senior season and hope it will be a great one.
