Smith ahead of the curve

While many prospects put off their recruitment, Atlanta (Ga.) cornerback Geno Smith is already taking his quite seriously.

A member of the Rivals250 to watch list, Smith already has an impressive list of offers. He is already preparing to put as much work into his decision as schools have in recruiting him.

Smith hopes to visit a few schools of interest close to home this spring. USC looks to be one of the schools that will make it on his summer itinerary.

"I'm going to try to take a few spring visits, but I don't want to go out too far during the school year," said Smith, who also plans to run track in the spring. "But during the summer I plan on traveling and flying out to the West Coast. I don't think my official visits will be enough, so I want to get more before I take those.

"Coach [Ed] Orgeron said the Rising Stars Camp would be a great camp to come to, so I could go to that and then hang out on my unofficial visit."

With a recent offer in hand, Smith has already established himself as a player of interest to the Trojans.

"I talked to Coach Orgeron on the phone a little bit, and then Lane Kiffin talked to me and offered me," Smith said. "That's a huge offer. It's a prestigious and well-known school. Most players don't receive that offer."

Smith's recruitment is still in its infancy, but the cornerback has already done some homework on USC.

"I know a lot about the school," Smith said. "There's a worldwide network from the school. If you graduate from USC, there are so many connections that will open up for you."

With schools across the country calling him, Smith doesn't plan on including geography into his decision.

"I'm looking at the bigger picture," Smith said. "I want to go to the school that opens doors and provides the most opportunities. I don't care where in the country that is."

Smith said he would let his recruitment play out before making a decision.

"I'm going to wait until after my senior season. I want to take my official visits and finish the season, so it'll take a while."
