Sleeper lands huge offer

The Ohio State coaching staff continues its slew of offers this week and the latest to receive one is Bedford (Ohio) defensive back Tyvis Powell. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound prospect was not a well known prospect heading into the off-season but interest has skyrocketed recently in the tall, athletic corner. While the offers have recently started to roll in, the latest one definitely put a smile on Powell's face.

"Oh man, I nearly dropped the phone," said Powell of his reaction. "I nearly dropped the phone and ran down the street. My coach told me to be ready around 8 tonight and that my phone was going to ring. Jim Tressel called me at about 8:07 and he said that he would like to see me in Scarlet and Gray and that he wanted me to be a Buckeye and was offering me a scholarship."

The Buckeyes are the most recent to offer Powell but plenty of other schools are showing interest.

"West Virginia, Cincinnati, Minnesota and most of the MAC (have offered)," Powell said. "Michigan State, Michigan, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Duke (are also showing interest)."

Listed at 6-foot-4, Powell is one of the taller defensive backs that you will find but the offer from Ohio State is at corner. So where does that offer put the Buckeyes?

"Number one overall," Powell stated emphatically. "I have to talk to my coach and my family (before issuing a possible commitment) but I have definitely thought about (committing)."

As more colleges are getting a hold of Powell's junior film, interest continues to grow.

"I think I did good," Powell said of his junior season. "I think I had a good year. Obviously you always want to do better so that is my goal for next season, just to do better than I did last year."

Powell is planning to be very busy on the camp circuit this summer.

"I'm going to the O-State camp, Michigan State, Michigan, Tennessee, Duke, and North Carolina," he said.

>Analysis:

While Powell is a relatively new name in recruiting circles, it is no secret that Ohio State needs a corner or two in this class. Powell is a tall and athletic player in the mold of 2011 Ohio State signee DerJuan Gambrell.
