Jelks looks back at senior year, recruiting

Game against Powell

"The championship game was a roller coaster of emotion. Basically they'd scored to make it 7-0, then we'd score. Then they'd score and we answered. It was 14-14 in the second quarter and it stayed like that until the end and our kicker came up with a big kick to make it 17-14. It was just a great game, Powell's a great team, but our coaches talked about adversity all the time and we fought til the end.

"I couldn't ask for a better year. My team, we fought for each other and loved each other. We were like family and I think that's why we were able to come out on top and with the trophy."

range

"Kyler had been kicking consistent for us throughout the year, but it was about 4th and eight. It was probably max his range the field goal was, but he came through for is. But yeah, it was probably the max of his range, maybe a little bit out."

improvement

"I really feel like I worked on my strength and my footwork and just being more powerful coming off the ball. That's what my O-line coach wanted me to work on this summer and he said they were really impressed with my play this year."

work on

"I'm just going to hit the weights and when I get to college I'll see what they have to do."

Mr.Football

"It was a huge honor to be recognized as a top three offensive lineman in Class 3A, it's just a great honor, but I'm not disappointed. I mean, of course I'd love to have won that award, but I would've traded that Mr.Football for a gold ball [state trophy] any day."

visits

"They've been by my school quite a bit and Coach Donovan did have an in-home but it was with my parents because I was away for basketball. So Coach Donovan met with my parents. Coach Hand is coming up here soon and Coach Franklin will be coming in January."

"I'm 100-percent Vanderbilt commit right now, there's no changing me," Jelks said. "These coaches still call but I'm not interested at all. There's no changing my mind, come signing day, I will be signing with Vandy, there's no doubt about it. I really want to clear that up because I got a lot of texts and stuff yesterday to ask me about it, but it came up the wrong way and I'm 100-percent Commodore and that's not going to change."

off-season

"From an athletic view point, I'm just going to be playing basketball. I'm lifting right now, and then after basketball, I'm going to really hit the weights. And from a school stand point, I still have a 4.0 GPA and that's what I'm striving for is to graduate with a 4.0, and just finish with that 4.0."
