Maxie makes the call
The Flashes continue to close strong in the 2012 recruiting cycle as Darrell Hazell and company have landed some of the top remaining targets on the board over the last week. Most recently was the commitment of Colleyville (Tex.) Covenant Christian Academy defensive back Adam Maxie. The 6-foot-1, 172-pound prospect made the call to Kent State just a few days ago.
"I committed actually on January 26th (to the coaching staff)," said Maxie. "I just felt more comfortable with (Kent State) than UCLA and I actually didn't take the visit to UCLA."
For Maxie, the relationship he established with the coaching staff as well as the potential for early playing time was just too much to ignore.
"I liked the coaches," he said. "They're all really welcoming and really willing to do whatever it takes to improve the program. My parents really liked it and I felt like it was a good fit for me. They told me I was one of the highest prospects on their board and I just felt like I would be able to contribute faster at Kent State instead of UCLA."
Throughout the process, Maxie made a strong connection with a pair of Kent State assistants and credits both of them for the job they did recruiting him.
"Coach (Marcus) Freeman, the linebackers coach, I've been talking to him for a couple of months now," Maxie said. "I'm close to him already and he's helped me out with this whole process. Coach (Jon) Heacock, my position coach, I feel really comfortable with him, just how he coaches and how he runs meetings."
A tall, rangy athlete, Maxie could project just about anywhere in the secondary but says he will get his first shot at cornerback.
"They want me at corner," he explained. "They just want to see how spring ball goes and just see where it goes from there really (as far as early playing time). I feel pretty confident, the move from safety to corner is a lot more natural to me. I'm confident that I can make an impact as soon as I get there."
Maxie is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com.
