Florida State defensive end signee Mario Edwards was so excited to begin his career as a Seminole he couldn't wait until June 15.

Instead Edwards Jr., ranked the No. 3 overall prospect in the class of 2012 by Rivals, arrived in Tallahassee for good on Sunday in order to get ready for summer workouts and fall camp.

"I'm really excited," he said. "My official reporting day was supposed to be June 15 but I wanted to come a little early and get kind of used to how Florida State runs things and just try to get a little step ahead of my competition. I'm really excited about leaving and just opening up a new chapter in my life."

Edwards is following in the footsteps of his father, Mario Edwards Sr., who starred at defensive back for FSU from 1995-99 before going on to have a five-year NFL career. Not only will junior be attending the same school his father starred at, but he will be wearing his number 15 as well.

"It's basically walking in his footsteps kind of," Edwards Jr. said. "But it is a challenge because he wore that number and he did a lot of great things at Florida State. So I want to wear the number and try to do the same things he did, if not better."

Edwards Jr. is of course a junior only in name to his father these days. Edwards Sr. played at FSU just under 200 pounds, while Edwards Jr. comes in as a freshman at 6-foot-4, 293-pounds.

Edwards Jr. used go by the nickname of little Rio, but when he got to high school people had to stop calling him little.

"My dad's name was Rio so they just called me little Rio," Edwards Sr. said. "But then I started getting bigger so they just dropped the little and just kept it as Rio."

Edwards Jr. will be hoping to add to an already talented defensive end group when fall camp rolls around.

"It's an already stacked group really. They have everything," Edwards Jr. said. "I'm just going out there to put my talents out there and just give 110 percent, chase the ball, and just go out there and try to make a difference."
