Florida defensive end looking at five

Florida defensive end Eric Mayes has a list of more than 20 offers, but he's narrowed down to a group of five.

And of those, he's already close to scheduling official visits to three. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Sarasota native lists Kentucky, Purdue, West Virginia, USF and Marshall, with the first three likely destinations for officials.

"I did a lot of research about those five schools," Mayes said. "And I liked those as my top five."

Mayes received his offer from West Virginia last week, the latest on a list that's reached nearly two dozen. The Mountaineers jumped in with the group of finalists, which include the Boilermakers. Although he hasn't taken an unofficial to West Lafayette, Mayes likes the information he's been able to gather.

"I love the town they are in," he said of the Boilermakers, "and I like the coaches, they are very friendly. They have a good thing there, and the coaches are close to the players, I like that."

Mayes, who'd like to double of junior season production, when he had 10 sacks for Booker High School, as a senior, says he's expecting to schedule his official to Purdue this week, looking at a weekend date in September. And the officials to Kentucky and West Virginia could come around that time, as well.

"I'm looking for a brotherly school," Mayes said. "I want to be close to the coaches and it be a place I like. That's about it."
