With the departure of Jamarcus Allen and Quanterus Smith on the defensive line, the Hilltoppers are in search of an impact player that can contribute immediately in the brutal toe-to-toe battle with opposing offensive hogmollies.

On WKU's radar is East Los Angeles College (Monterey Park, CA) defensive lineman Demetrius Campbell, who has the versatility to play both tackle and end positions on the defensive front.

"I feel like I can play anywhere on the field, especially on the defensive line. I feel like I can slide inside and play defensive tackle, even nose guard, but I feel like I am most successful coming off the edge based on the numbers. Playing at defensive end is where I'd most likely excel in at the next level with the proper technique and the proper coaching because I feel like one-on-one, I can't be blocked."

I asked Demetrius why he liked playing the end better than tackle or nose guard, his response was golden, "because every game I was recording a sack, so it was kind of fun."

Spoken like a true defensive end.

Campbell made his official visit to WKU back on December 7th-9th amongst all the craziness of Willie Taggart fleeing the Hilltoppers to become the new head coach of South Florida. Despite the coaching turnover, Campbell was impressed with what Western Kentucky had to offer:

"Bowling Green had a lot more to offer than I expected, I liked the city and I liked the country-ness about it. Coming from Florida, then making my way out here to Los Angeles, it's two totally different worlds. It's a little fast out here and I like being back in the country, so that was something that appealed to me about Bowling Green, and the team and all the guys they have from Florida, so I felt like I was back at home."

The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder lists his top schools as Mississippi State, Kansas State, Western Kentucky, West Virginia, and Baylor.

With national signing day less than a month away, Campbell still has some official visits left on his agenda before he makes his big decision, "I plan on going to Mississippi State January 18th-20th and possibly squeezing K-State and West Virginia in there towards the end of the month as well. So, there is still a whirlwind of things, still trying to figure it out and looking at how things are going to work out for me."

Wherever Demetrius Campbell ends up on signing day, expect a motivated, hard-nosed athlete who is quick off the ball and will garner respect from the opposition in the trenches.
