Thomas adds first offer
A three-year starter as a running back and safety at Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, Va., Shamarko Thomas has plenty of talent. The 5-foot-11, 192-pounder helped lead his team to an 8-2 record and spot in the playoffs last season.
This spring he was rewarded for his hard work and abilities with a scholarship offer from Kent State.
"They offered about two weeks ago," Thomas said. "They were at the school and said they were offering. I'm very interested in them."
Shamarko also has heard plenty from Tennessee, Virginia Tech, East Carolina, Ohio State and smaller schools like Liberty. This summer he hopes to get a look at several of those schools.
"I'm going to go to a lot of camps this summer," he said. "I'm probably going to Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Ohio State and ECU for a passing league."
Kent State offered Thomas as a free safety, where last season he posted 77 tackles and picked off five passes.
"My strengths are my speed and tackling," he said. "I'm working on improving my ball handling and agility."
As a senior, Thomas hopes his team can build on its strong finish last season and take the next step. He's also set some lofty personal goals.
"I have some great goals," he said. "I want to break all the Ocean Lakes records. I'm pretty close in tackles and interceptions."
This summer, in addition to attending several camps, he'll continue to work hard in the weight room and his team begins a passing league on June 4.
He plans to make his college decision some time after his senior season.
