Speedy receiver snares Iowa St. offer

Fast 40 times are tossed around by high school players and coaches so much that they've come to have little value. But when an athlete is also a Division I caliber track sprinter and has the electronic times in that sport to back him up, there's no doubt. And that is the case with diminutive Opa Locka (Fla.) Monsignor Pace wide receiver Derrick Hopkins.

The 5-foot-6, 160-pound Hopkins is rocketing up Iowa State's recruiting board in the same way he rockets through and past opposing defenses. Hopkins is now on ISU's offer list for 2009 - along with his high school teammate Sterling Griffin - and the Cyclones would like them both to make an official visit this fall. Griffin said last week that he thinks an Iowa State visit will happen for him. Hopkins was a little less sure.

"I don't have any visits set up, I'm going to start doing that," Hopkins said. "I really can't say where I want to go, I don't know yet. I'm keeping my mind open and talking to my parents about everything."

Kansas State, Central Michigan and Florida International are other schools that have offered Hopkins.
