Monday practice & scrimmage report

A full and detailed report on Monday's scrimmage, a photo gallery, video highlights, analysis/observations and more from the scrimmage coming soon for Warchant.com subscribers.

NOTES

The Florida State football team had spring practice number five Monday afternoon and held a second straight half-scrimmage in full pads. After 14 periods on the practice fields, the Seminoles moved over to Doak Campbell Stadium for the scrimmage.

After going 9-for-9 on Friday, quarterback Drew Weatherford had another impressive outing while the running game also produced some big plays. Weatherford completed 6-of-7 passes for 164 yards with touchdown passes to Greg Carr (46 yards) and Richard Goodman (38 yards). Antone Smith turned the corner and scored on a 35-yard run while walk-on tailback Pat Davis also found the endzone on a 43-yard rush. Lorenzo Booker added a pair of 20-yard runs and a catch of 27 yards.

A fifth score came on a 34-yard pass from Tommy Keane to Chase Walker. Neefy Moffett (three tackles for loss) and Andre Fluellen (two tackles for loss) led the defense during the regular scrimmage. The defense got some revenge in goalline drills, keeping the offense out of the endzone on all eight attempts. Geno Hayes had a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery in goalline. Walk-on Marcus Ford worked with the first team offense at right guard during Monday's scrimmage.

In goalline drills, the defense bounced back from a shaky scrimmage and held the offense out of the endzone on all eight tries.

The Seminoles will take Tuesday off and return to practice on Wednesday afternoon.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOBBY BOWDEN

(on the offense)

"The penalties killed them so we've got to get that straightened out. They did move the ball better; we had some long runs and some long passes. Drew [Weatherford] was hot again, the boys caught the ball pretty good again and the blocking was better. We'll have to look at that film and see if the defense did do as well or did the offense do that much better. We'll have to look at the film and see what happened there."

(on how far along the team is so far in spring practice)

"We're about as far as we could be. We haven't lost anything and we've done just about everything we planned to do. I just wish we could scrimmage everyday because we've got young kids and they need that. We've also been fairly fortunate with injuries so that's good."

(on his concern with the defense after giving up five touchdowns today)

"That's the way it is in spring training; if your offense does good then you worry about your defense. If your defense does good, then you worry about your offense. I'd rather have a superior defense, but they're mighty young over there and they're learning a lot so we'll have to get that film and see if there is a major breakdown over there."

QUOTES FROM QUARTERBACK DREW WEATHERFORD

(on the offense's potential this season)

"Really the sky is the limit. It's going to come down to injuries and mental mistakes. I have to eliminate a lot of my mental errors, the offensive line has to do their job, it depends on everybody. Offense, defense, special teams, we all have to step it up a notch this year if we want to get to the national championship."

(on the general health of the offensive line compared to the spring of 2005)

"It's really nice to see everybody out there. We've got a lot of guys back, [center] John Frady is a huge addition, he's done a good job and he's kind of like the centerpiece of our offensive line."
