Cane visit will tell tale for Rasul

Coral Gables (Fla.) High School RB Amir Rasul is a former Hurricane commitment.

But he wound up decommitting and then pledging to Florida State.

Could that wind up reversing in the end?

Well new UM running backs coach Thomas Brown has made contact with Rasul, and the tailback will take an official visit to Miami (he says it likely will be a midweek visit since he's trying to fit in five visits this month before signing day).

"The first words out of coach Brown's mouth were `You need to get an official set up to Miami immediately,'" Rasul said. "Me and coach Brown, we had a good relationship when he was at Georgia. He's one of the coaches I admire a lot. Now I have a chance talk with him again in a different setting and it's a little better this time because it's a little closer."

Rasul says he prefers to remain in Florida for college, but says he considers himself a strong commitment to Florida State right now.

Of UM's chances, he says, "I have to take my official first and go from there."

Working in Miami's favor: "I like Mark Richt a lot," he said.

Rasul's other official visits will be to Alabama, North Carolina, USC and, he says, "probably" Wisconsin.

Is there local pressure for him to choose the Canes in the end?

"I got a lot of people that were mad at me for decommitting," Rasul said. "But it's not like I wanted to decommit, I love UM. It was flippy-floppy. Coach (Al) Golden, he kept it completely real with me, said `Listen Amir, we didn't get the backs that we wanted in 2015 so we'll have to recruit another back in your class.' I was okay with that and they went overboard and committed like four other backs. Competition is fine with me, but we're not trying to create another Alabama epidemic.

"Now it would be me and Travis (Homer) in the Miami class, which is pretty nice. I like Travis, have watched his highlights. And I know Sam (Bruce) and Jack (Allison), they're both real cool, I caught a liking toward them. That could be a factor."

CaneSport's take

Every year there are some recruits where you just never know what's going to happen. We put Rasul in that group. If he has a great visit to UM and bonds with coaches staying home will be a major draw for him.
