Miami Baseball: Canes fall to Irish in game two, 5-2
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The University of Miami baseball team dropped game two of its weekend set at Notre Dame, coming up short, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium.
“We had our opportunities,” head coach J.D. Arteaga said. “We hit some balls hard and hit into a couple double plays that really hurts us. We had a chance to sweep the last couple weekends and didn’t finish the job. Now, we’re fighting for our lives tomorrow. We will show up and compete tomorrow.”
The Hurricanes (12-10, 4-4 ACC) grabbed an early 1-0 for the second straight day.
Junior second baseman Dorian Gonzalez Jr. put Miami on the board in the first, but the Fighting Irish (14-8, 2-6 ACC) answered right back.
In the bottom half, Notre Dame graduate Simon Baumgardt knotted the score with a sacrifice fly to left.
Three innings later, the Fighting Irish broke things open.
Six of the first seven Notre Dame batters reached safely as the Irish mounted a three-spot in the fourth.
Designated hitter Brady Gumpf, catcher Carson Tinney, and center fielder T.J. Williams all had RBI hits to propel Notre Dame to a 4-1 victory.
Miami center fielder Edgardo Villegas smacked a solo shot to right field to pull the visitors within two, but Irish right-hander Ricky Reeth (1-2) held the Hurricanes.
Reeth pitched five innings of one-run baseball out of the bullpen to earn the win and secure the Fighting Irish's series.
Starter Rafe Schlesinger (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs across six innings.
Miami and Notre Dame wrap up the series on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
