Miami Baseball: Canes pull out victory over Irish in extras, 12-10

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Miami Hurricanes hitters heated up in the cold conditions at Frank Eck Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Despite playing in sub-40-degree temperatures, Miami mounted its largest inning of the year and outlasted Notre Dame in extras.

Freshman Daniel Cuvet delivered the game-winning hit in the 10th inning as the Hurricanes defeated the Fighting Irish12-10.

Cuvet’s single to right field pushed Miami (13-10, 5-4 ACC) ahead, 11-10, before sophomore Jason Torres provided insurance with a sacrifice fly two batters later.

Freshman Nick Robert capped off the comeback victory, shutting down the Irish (14-9, 2-7 ACC) in the 10th. Robert earned his team-leading fifth win across a career-long three innings in relief.

Notre Dame right-hander Bennett Flynn (1-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering both runs in extras.

The Fighting Irish jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, highlighted by graduate student David Glancy's grand slam in the fourth.

The Hurricanes responded with a crooked number.

Miami sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on five hits. Eight of the first nine Hurricanes reached safely, as senior Jacoby Long capped off the frame with a three-run homer.

In the win, all nine starting position players reached base for Miami, sparked by leadoff man Edgardo Villegas. Villegas tallied three hits and drew two walks to set the table for Cuvet and Torres.

The Hurricanes continued their road swing as Miami visits crosstown foe FIU on Tuesday. The first pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
