New defensive coordinator Lance Guidry brings a focus to the defensive backfield. The former McNeese St. DB has helped to produce some of the best coverage units in college football in the last few years.
At Guidry's previous stops, FAU (coached safeties) ranked 27th in coverage in 2020, Marshall ranked 48th in 2021, and 12th in coverage in 2022 (Miami ranked 11th in 2022).
The safety position at Miami is in good hands. Kamren Kinchens and James Williams are considered two of the best-returning safeties in the country according to pro football focus.
Marshall also ranked high in tackling grades in the last two years (28th and 11th). Miami has struggled in this area ranking 128th and 110th in 2021 and 2022.
The Hurricanes are bound to improve with the additions of veterans Davonte Brown and Terry Roberts via transfer portal. In 2021, Brown graded out at 82.3, which is higher than any year from last year's best corner and projected 2nd day NFL draft pick Tyrique Stevenson (76.7). Roberts received a 79 grade in 2022.
The talent is there for Guidry to take the defensive back room to new heights and he has the potential to mold the unit into the best in the country.
