Punter has UM offer, Canes on top and announcing soon

Ridgewood (NJ) punter Zach Feagles landed a Hurricane scholarship offer on Wednesday afternoon, a little over a week after he performed at a UM camp.

And yes, long-time Hurricane fans, Zach is the son of former UM and NFL punter Jeff Feagles.

“The Miami coaches called me Tuesday to offer but my phone was broken and my parents were out of town so they waited till they got back home,” Zach said. “Then coaches called again and coach (Todd) Hartley talked about my performance at the camp, how I compared to the other kids. He said they ranked their top guys they saw at their specialist camps and they ranked me at the top. So that’s how that offer came in.”

Feagles’ other offer is from Rutgers - he landed that three weeks ago.

“Going into the recruiting process Miami was my top choice being my dad’s alma mater,” Zach said. “It was `How cool would that be?’ going to your dad’s former school. I love it down there in Miami. I’ve been there in 2008 when my dad was inducted into the Hall of Fame there and I went down there for the camp. I really do like it down there.”

Feagles has UM as his top choice and says an announcement will come “within a week or two. I don’t want to keep the coaches waiting too long. The punting position is kind of hard to get people. You don’t want to wait too long, so I’d say a week or two to get back with the coaches.

“I’ve told them that. And I just have to talk about it more with my parents.”

Feagles also is a backup linebacker and the starting fullback in high school.

He says he’s punted his whole life.

“My dad being an ex-NFL punter, growing up he didn’t really expose me to any of the skill of punting until my sophomore year,” Feagles said. “Toward my sophomore year we started working on my craft as a punter.”

Last season Feagles averaged 42 yards per punt.

CaneSport’s take

We asked Feagles the chance he’ll pick the Canes, and his response was “Me and my parents will really sit down and think about the decision. I really couldn’t tell you between Miami and Rutgers. I have to consider the pros and cons. Rutgers is an hour away from where I live, so that wouldn’t be a bad fit. But neither would Miami.” He reiterates that UM is definitely ahead as of now, though. So unless something changes look for him to be on board by mid-July.
