Scrimmage recap: Solid day for King, Jacolby George stars with 127 yards

The Miami Hurricanes held their first fall scrimmage on Sunday night.

And there were big performances on both sides of the ball.

Perhaps the biggest story line of the evening? QB D’Eriq King had a solid showing off his torn ACL, completing 12 of 16 passes for 124 yards with a pair of TDs.

"It was great to see D'Eriq King, I thought he was phenomenal running the offense," coach Manny Diaz said. "He extended plays with his legs, a tough guy to defend."

And freshman WR Jacolby George, who was a standout in early fall practices, also shined with seven catches for 127 yards and a TD on a slant. Charleston Rambo also found the end zone (a great one-handed catch after he beat Tyrique Stevenson by a step) and had 60 yards, and another freshman, Romello Brinson, had four catches for 73 yards including a long grab from Jake Garcia. Mark Pope also had a good stat line with three grabs for 56 yards. And Brashard Smith had two catches for 30 yards while Xavier Restrepo had five catches.

"The guy does it every time we scrimmage," Diaz said.

"Those guys up front really stood out," Diaz said.

The bottom line?

"Guys played hard," Diaz said.

He added looking ahead that "I told the team that we've practiced nine times. There's evidence on both sides of the ball that this can be an outstanding football team. But there's also evidence on both sides of the ball that we're not quite there yet. Greatness comes from being consistently good - you always have that tug of war (between offense and defense in fall camp). That's what this next week is about: Let's take that next step and not be satisfied with being good. We think greatness is available."

He added of the receivers as a group that "It was spread out with a lot of numbers," Diaz said.

On the defensive side?

Weakside linebacker Keontra Smith had four tackles, a sack and pass breakup.

"Keontra stood out all camp," Diaz said. "Made a big tackle where felt it changed momentum, got the defense back going again, everybody fired up on that sideline."

And DE Zach McCloud also had a sack late in the scrimmage in a long yardage situation.

On special teams good news for UM was the performance of freshman kicker Andy Borregales, who connected on both his field goals from 37 and 30 yards while going four-for-four on extra points.
