MIAMI — The University of Miami took care of business.
In a backyard battle against crosstown foe FIU, the Hurricanes beat the Panthers, 14-7, at FIU Baseball Stadium Tuesday evening.
The Hurricanes (14-10) scored six runs on three hits as Miami sent 12 batters to the plate in the pivotal seventh inning.
Catcher Carlos Perez worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Hurricanes ahead 8-7 before center fielder Jacoby Long padded the lead with a two-run double down the left-field line.
As they had done all night, the Hurricanes put pressure on the Panthers (13-12).
J.D. Urso followed with a safety squeeze to push the advantage to four.
With runners on the corners, Urso ran into the middle of first and second, forcing a rundown. While Urso caught the attention of FIU’s defense, Long scampered 90 feet to steal home.
Following the six-run frame, relievers Chris Scinta (1-0), Brian Walters, and Myles Caba retired eight of the final ten batters to secure the Hurricanes’ 12th straight victory over FIU.
In the win, the Hurricanes had three stolen bases, including two at home by Urso and Long.
Up next, Miami welcomes No. 3 Clemson to Mark Light Field. The three-game set begins at 7 p.m. Thursday.
