CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team (3-0) secured the opening series sweep over the Niagara Purple Eagles (0-3) Sunday afternoon by 11-1 in seven innings.

Pitcher Brian Walters (1-0) started his first outing of the season strong, ending with ten strikeouts in five innings – notching his first career win. Ten strikeouts is a new single-game career high for the right-hander. His previous strikeout high (five) occurred last April against Louisville.

A dominant third inning helped lift the Hurricanes to an early 4-1 lead, with a crucial double coming from the bat of Dorian Gonzalez Jr. that scored freshman infielder Brandon DeGoti. Gonzalez ended the afternoon perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBI.

The momentum Miami created in the third inning stayed with the team for the rest of the game. The Hurricanes scored two runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

In his first collegiate start, Miami native Brandon DeGoti smashed his first career home run, launching it 402 feet over the left-center field fence. DeGoti ended his Hurricane debut 1-for-3 at the plate.

Senior outfielder Derek Williams was also dialed in at the plate for the 2025 opening series. The Wichita State transfer ended the three-game home stretch with five hits, two doubles, going 5-for-13 overall with four RBI.

Next for the Hurricanes is a trip to Boca Raton to face the FAU Owls on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. Miami leads the series 73-23 overall and is 13-8 while playing at FAU Stadium.
