Sources have confirmed to Canes County that UCF co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach Tim Harris Jr. is set to return home to Miami-Dade County and accept the running backs coach opening at Miami.
The Harris name is Miami royalty. Harris Jr. is a member of the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame for being a four-time NCAA All-American and six-time ACC Champion in the 800-meter.
His brother Brandon Harris is a Hurricanes NFL alumni. He attended Miami Booker T. Washington and earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors before coming to Coral Gables and being named a first-team All-ACC and second-team All-American in 2009. He ended up being a second-round draft pick for the Texans in 2011.
His father, Tim Harris Sr., was the Miami running backs coach and assistant director of football operations, serving two stints on the Miami staff (2008-2011, 2014-2016). The senior Harris is one of the legendary coaches in Miami-Dade County, winning three state titles.
Harris Jr. also spent time as a high school coach at Booker T. Washington, including one season as the head coach in 2014. In his lone season as the head man, Harris Jr. led the Tornadoes to a 14-0 record, a state championship, and won several national and state coach of the year honors.
He has been in the college ranks since 2015, spending seven seasons at FIU where his duties ranged from running backs coach to offensive coordinator. According to the UCF football site, under Harris in 2017, the Panthers earned the second-most rushing TDs (20), yards (2,069), and yards per game (159.2) in school history.
During his time at FIU, he turned Miami Central alum Anthony Jones and D'Vonte Price into two of the most productive backs in the country, eventually earning opportunities to play in the NFL.
In the last two seasons at UCF, his top three backs totaled 1745 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2021 then 1965 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2022.
