On Thursday, Head Coach Mario Cristobal addressed the media after spring practice No. 8.
He started with an opening statement:
"Good morning, and good afternoon, finishing up practice number [eight]. Shells today which is a normal practice for us. Obviously, technique and fundamentals are a premium. For us, situational football, putting us in extended drives, and working on special teams phases was full part of practice today. As well as all of our technical and physical work that goes with block destruction, line of scrimmage, front-seven, the O-Line and tight ends."
First, Cristobal answered a question about keeping Jacolby George on the roster after some unsportsmanlike personal fouls last season (0:47). Cristobal initially thought about removing George but believes it's going to 'end really well' with the senior wideout.
Cristobal also talked about some players standing out in spring (2:41). Freshman linebacker Cameron "Bobby" Pruitt was mentioned as a 'physically gifted guy. Freshman safety Zaquan Patterson was mentioned as 'a guy that just gets it.' Freshman tight end Elija Lofton 'fits right in.' He also mentioned wide receiver JoJo Trader really stands out, and George has had 'really good springs.' Isaiah Horton was also mentioned as a player that really stands out. Transfer center Zach Carpenter mentioned, and offensive lineman Anez Cooper 'keeps getting better.' Matthew McCoy has stepped up, and Wesley Bissainthe is having a really good spring.
Cristobal described quarterback Cam Ward as a tough, physical, and relentless competitor (3:59).
He also commented on sophomore running back Tre'Vonte Citizen, saying that 'something clicked today,' and 'today was his best day.' Cristobal also shares thoughts on Zion Nelson's recovery (5:20).
Cristobal compared Lofton's impact to that of Rueben Bain and Francis Mauigoa (6:16), who were Freshman All-ACC players.
He also addresses the linebacker room and mentions standouts Raul "PoPo" Aguirre, Adarius Hayes, Marcellius Pulliam, Kaleb Spencer, and Chase Smith (6:42).
Lastly, Cristobal comments on the new technology that will be incorporated into college football this upcoming season (7:34).
