Whether it's under the Friday night lights on the football field or weekday afternoons in the blazing sunshine on the track, Miami pledge Avantae Williams doesn't lack for confidence. He loves the high level of competition he finds himself apart of on a daily basis.
"I love it, compete with the best to become the best," he told THI.
The 6-0, 171-pound Deland, FL, native committed to Miami in February. He’s happy about his decision, but realized there is a long way to go so he has to make sure he stays focused.
"It's a part of the process, I got to continue to get better everyday," he said.
Growing up a Hurricanes fan, he can’t escape the instate rivalry with Florida that rests within his very own family.
"I grew up a Miami fan, but my family on the other hand likes UF," Williams said.
Both programs hosted him for unofficial visits on game days last season, and obviously would like to keep him in state when the time comes for Williams to make a decision.
The 2020 athlete will eventually have his pick of the litter when it comes to choosing a school,
"I can play running back, punt (and) kick return, along with some secondary positions," he said. "Track has gotten me faster, and has helped me out."
With schools such as Alabama, Florida and UCLA coming on as early suitors, North Carolina will spend the next few years working to build a relationship to perhaps fend off the other Florida schools and big-time programs interested in Williams.
The Heels have turned to tight ends coach Chad Scott as the lead recruiter for Williams, so watching how their relationship grows over the next couple of years will be interesting.
"When he offered, we had a good conversation about things not related to the recruitment process, but other things, like school and life situations," he said, referring to his interaction with Scott.
Williams is hoping to visit UNC this summer, possibly for one of the day camps.
