Miami has produced some of the best players in college football, and some of the best kickers/punters. We took a poll in our premium message board Canes Talk to see who fans thought was the best kicking specialist of all time at Miami.
4. Jose Borregales
Jose Borregales was tied in votes with several others (Jeff Feagles, Pat O'Donnell, and Danny Miller) for the last spot on the list. Still, the local gets the nod as he is the only Miami Hurricane to win the Lou Groza Award, which goes to the nation's best kicker.
Borregales played most of his career at FIU and finished his final year at "The U." In that year 2020, Borregales was named a first-team consensus All-American, first-team All-ACC, and named to the All-ACC Academic Team.
3. Matt Boster
Matt Bosher kicked and punted at a high level as a Miami Hurricane. He left Miami with a long list of accolades, including the Jack Harding Award (Team MVP), All-ACC first and second team as a kicker and punter, and was a Lou Groza semifinalist.
Bosher played in 50 games which tied for third-most in school history. Bosher holds the record for 14 consecutive field goals made.
He closed out his career ranked second in school history in consecutive PATs made (105), tied for fifth in field goals made (45), seventh in PATs made (127), and seventh in total points scored (260) and points scored kicking (260).
Bosher successfully made 84.9 percent of his career field goal attempts (45-of-53)
2. Lou Hedley
Lou Hedley is arguably the most outstanding punter ever to put on a Miami uniform. In his four-year career, the Australian native averaged 45.2 yards per punt, leaving Coral Gables as a second-team All-American, a two-time second-team All-ACC, and a Ray Guy Finalist honors, which recognizes college football’s best punter every year.
Hedley was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award in the last three seasons, having been named a finalist for the award in 2020. In 47 games with the Hurricanes, he dropped 77 punts inside the opposing 20-yard line.
1. Carlos Huerta
Carlos Huerta was the starting kicker on Miami's 1991 National Championship team, emerged as a walk-on, and became a consensus All-American and First-Team All-BIG EAST selection.
Huerta, established an NCAA record with 157 consecutive points after attempts (PATs) during his career as a four-year starter (1988-91).
He ranks 60th on the NCAA's all-time scoring list with 397 career points, including 73 field goals. Huerta set or tied 13 different Miami records.
During his four years as a starter, Huerta led the team in scoring each season. He hit several game-winners. Huerta connected on a game-clinching field goal with 43 seconds remaining to give Miami the 31-30 win over Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1988. Huerta also hit game-winners over Arkansas in 1988 and Michigan State in 1989.
A local product out of Christopher Columbus High School, Huerta garnered numerous accolades as a Hurricane, including All-American honors from the Associated Press, Walter Camp Football Foundation, The Football News, and The Sporting News.
