Most freshmen probably do not expect to make a significant impact in week one let alone year one. But that is exactly what we are witnessing from freshman infielder Blake Cyr.

The first-year player is second on the team in batting average (.455), second in hits, and first in RBIs as of February 26th. He is also among the leaders in on-base (.500) percentage and slugging percentage (.909).

“I couldn’t say that he was going to second on our team in RBIs right behind YoYo [Moralaes]. He’s gotten off to a great start,” said Head Coach Gino DiMare during media availability Wednesday afternoon.

Cyr was a three-year letterman from Wyndemere High School out of the Central Florida area. The 5’11” 190-pound second baseman has some power which are traits that DiMare saw early on.

“He swung the bat well in the fall and in the early spring,” said DiMare. "So you can see his tools. His strengths are his bat, bat speed, quickness of his bat, he’s got some pop and he can run.”

"We did like when Blake stepped on campus the way he played the game. He’s got a lot of energy and a lot of passion. For a freshman coming in he seems to be a well-like player by our guys which is good.”

He garnered the nickname “Hollywood” from pitcher Ronaldo Gallo because of his personality. The team has certainly embraced Cyr and appreciates what he brings to the team.

Against FAU Cyr had three at-bats and registered a hit, a walk, and a strikeout. He hit his first home run against Stetson and had his best game against Indiana State when he had two home runs and five RBIs.

Cyr and the Hurricanes will look to bounce back from a loss to FAU in Gainesville for their annual meeting with the Florida Gators. The three-game series starts Friday at 6:30 with Gage Ziehl set to take the mound for the Hurricanes.
