Defensive line coach Jason Taylor and linebackers coach Derek Nicholson spoke with the media after spring practice No. 5 Thursday.
Taylor first discussed the physicality of the practice in full pads. He also commented on the players' making a jump under his guidance in year two (1:03). He also talked about Malik Bryant playing more of a "Jack" role (2:04). The role is an outside linebacker who primarily rushes the passer but occasionally covers pass-catchers.
He shares his thoughts on how Rueben Bain can improve (2:39), how the veterans are helping to guide the younger players (5:33), and true freshman Marquise Lightfoot (7:00).
His son, safety Isaiah Taylor, joined the team via the transfer portal, and he shares thoughts on having in on the roster (7:53) and having Akheem Mesidor back on the field from injury (8:33)
Nicholson talks about the competition at linebacker (0:32) and the second-year guys taking the next step (1:22)—Raul Aguirre is mentioned. He also comments on new enrollees Cameron "Bobby" Pruitt and Adarius Hayes (1:57). He also comments on Francisco "Kiko" Mauigoa, although out this spring due to injury (2:52).
Miami added the title of Co-DC along with linebacker's coach for Nicholson, and he explained how that changed his responsibilities (4:12).
