There is no questioning Isaiah Wong's drive and determination. The fourth-year junior from Piscataway, NJ leads the 15th-ranked Miami Hurricanes in points per game and is always looking to improve his game to help his team and better prepare himself for the next level.
Wong has received plenty of preseason and midseason recognition including most recently named top ten for the Jerry West Award.
His mother, LaChelle Wong, instilled a foundation in Isaiah that he will take with him forever. It started with a contract that Isaiah agreed to sign at a young age.
"I ran my household like a project management team," LaChelle said. "Every year we had contracts. We went over goals that we wanted to mark off and I knew that as long as we were accomplishing things we would stay in a good place. You would all fill good about yourself as long as you were focused on accomplishing your goals. I gave them instructions on what was expected from them."
Wong feels he greatly benefited from being part of that type of structure and it continues to help organize his life.
"It's helped me to organize my life stuff," Wong said. "My mom prepared me to better achieve my goals and overall become a better person."
Similar to how businesses go through peaks and valleys of production, Wong at times has to reevaluate his performance in order to achieve his ultimate goals.
"Just about every year I kind of go through a point where I'm not feeling as good," Isaiah said. "The mental part of the game is big for me. I always try to make myself feel as confident as possible."
Coming out of Monsignor Bonner High School (PA), Wong was a consensus top-90 prospect, and a four-star recruit ranked No. 78 nationally, including No. 12 among point guards. Wong is a two-time ACC freshman of the week, and a third-team ACC selection as a sophomore.
This season Wong is averaging 16.2 points per game while shooting 44.9 percent from the field. He also leads the team in assists with 3.5 per game.
"They had to make sure that they knew what it is they were investing in. If they really wanted it, then we wanted to invest behind them. We gave him every opportunity he needed and gave him all of the support for where he wanted to go."
