Offensive Coordinator Shannon Dawson talked to the media after practice number four. He shared his thoughts on the depth chart:
"It's day to day...and everything is judged. Effort is judged. Knowing what you need to know is judged. We got competition across the board which we are going to keep it that way. I would anticipate a lot of guys playing skill here. I would anticipate a lot of rotation and a lot of guys playing. We're not sitting here with a guy that's returning with 100 receptions; you know what I mean. So let's see who can play when we turn the lights on."
On how many playmakers can potentially touch the ball in a game:
"How many I feel comfortable playing. We've had, at any given time, we've had 12 guys touch balls in games before, which that's everybody, tight ends, running backs. Eight to ten, two deep across the board is typical. You got to feel good about two deep. But, yeah, go play ball man."
On if he is seeing more downfield catches:
"Last two days I'd day we made a little emphasis to stretch the field a little bit. Those plays take time. It's probably one of the harder things, besides pass protection which takes the most time, especially against our defense. But that connection down the field, quarterback, receiver timing. It takes time. We're not where we need to be with that."
On using tight ends in the offense:
"We've been doing that for the last eight to ten years, and so I mean, you'll see them all over the place. The one thing we've done over the past four years with them, is line them up everywhere. It could be outside receiver; they could be inside, it could be off alignment, on, they're going to move around. The best thing is if you got a guy that really threatens a defense with his ball skills and movement, body control, and all the rest, you can be elite at that position."
On finesse versus power for backup quarterbacks Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams:
"I don't know about those two terms, but that's a really good question because those two guys have been extremely consistent for the four practices. Been very pleased with both of those guys. As far as picking up the pass game, knowing where to go with the ball on time. Those two guys have made huge strides since I've been here. Very proud of them. Their attitudes are off the chart."
On Jacurri Brown's accuracy:
"I've seen huge strides in pocket accuracy. Like sitting in the pocket, intermediate in the middle of the field throws, I mean his comfort level with those right now have improved drastically."
On Emory Williams:
With Emory, Emory's got a decent command of the offense. He was asked to do a lot of these things in his previous life, and so a lot of the communication stuff, and everything comes extremely natural to him. Both of those kids are extremely talented kids, and the best part about both of them is they root for each other, which is what I like to see."
On the depth of the offensive line:
"If those five can play the whole season (laughing)...you better have eight to ten. You want two deep across the board. We got good able bodies. If I had to sit with Coach [Alex] Mirabal right now, I don't know what he would say about, like if we had to play tomorrow, we would have a swing guy here or there, but ultimately I think we have the bodies that at the end camp we would feel good about. Two-deep or close to two-deep."
On wide receiver Isaiah Horton:
"He's doing good. He's up and down. He's got to do everything all day right. I think that's the best way to put that. He's shown some flashes of hey, this kid's extremely talented, but it ain't all about that either. He's got to be a complete teammate, complete everything. He has the ability to do that, because he's a good kid and his future's bright. He's talented. He does flash at times. Consistency is what going to win with him over time.
On Jacolby George:
"Probably similar to what I just said. At times, just the real deal, and at times he'll go spurts without noticing him. Consistency, you know."
On the drops that he's seen from the pass-catchers in practice:
"It's normal. We need to be overall more consistent, but it isn't anything that's skewed out of proportion right now. I mean kids straining. Defense straining. Are we catching every ball? No. Are we catching our fair share? Yes. Do we need to catch more? Absolutely. We need to do better with contested catches, you know, when things are tough. We got a few guys that are making contested catches unbelievable, and then at times, we get the ball batted out when the ball hits our hands, and our defense does a good job of getting that third arm in there. We got to keep working with that."
