Video: Tyrique Stevenson Performing At High Level At Senior Bowl Practice

Former Miami defensive back Tyrique Stevenson is turning heads in Mobile, AL at Senior Bowl practice. The raves have been coming in droves from spectators.

Stevenson was one of the top prospects coming out of the country out of Miami Southridge High School. Rivals rated him as a four-star prospect, the No. 37 prospect nationally, No. 6 cornerback nationally, and was selected to play in the 2018 Rivals Five-Star Challenge. He transferred to Southridge after attending nearby South Dade.

He chose Georgia over Miami originally to play his college football. After two seasons with the Bulldogs, he then decided to come back home to play for the hometown Hurricanes. He played in 24 games and four starts at Georgia totaling 47 tackles, two tackles for loss, and added 10 pass breakups.

He went on to play two seasons for the Hurricanes before declaring for the NFL Draft and accepted an invite for the Senior Bowl.

In preparation, Stevenson trained with Juwan Dowells who trained some of the top defensive backs over the years.

Dowells worked with current NFL players Fabian Moreau, DJ Swearinger, Anthony Harris, Chris Lamons, and current Miami Hurricanes Davonte and Damari Brown.

First-round management, Stevenson's agency, reached out to Dowells to help him prepare for the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine.

"I worked with him on technique," said Dowell on his training with Stevenson. "Press-man stuff, hips stuff, some breaks. He's up there training for the combine. He really wanted to get back into some DB movements."

Dowell worked with him for four days at House of Athletes in Tampa, FL. Dowell spoke highly of his confidence going into Mobile.

"Tyrique is a very confident athlete. He knows his strengths and he knows his weaknesses and he plays toward his strengths. He's locked-in from the word go. He's in control of his body at all times. That's really one of his biggest attributes. How confident he moves."

Stevenson had an overall solid career at Miami. He earned All-ACC Honorable mention in 2021 making 10 starts. He registered an impressive 76.7 overall defensive grade over the course of the 2022 season, but had a couple of games (Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina) where he graded below his average. Last season Stevenson was under his third different coaching staff in as many years.

"I think any time you go through a coaching change you have those bumps and bruises. I think he was a product of an athlete where the system changed and he tried to fit the best he can and through that you are going to have bumps and bruises. I think it was a mix of trying to do what the coaches wanted him to do versus doing what he can do."

Stevenson is putting together one of the best performances of all the defensive backs at the Senior Bowl thus far. He is positioning himself to possibly be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. If he is able to accomplish that feat, he would be the first Miami Hurricane defensive back drafted in round one since Artie Burns in 2016.

"The show he's putting on now, he's definitely setting himself up to be one of the first DBs taken. I ultimately think he can go out there on the field and compete against anybody and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go early on the first day. It's the type of mentality he's expecting. He definitely has that confidence in himself and I have that confidence in him as well."
